"They should just read my book!" My client's burst of frustration caught me by surprise. But I understood. She'd poured everything into her book – all her research, every argument and insight. But now, during her book launch, she was struggling to translate her written passion into compelling presentations.
The prospect of standing before an audience had revealed an unexpected challenge. Writing a powerful book was one thing. Speaking its message aloud was another entirely
Many speakers are surprised that they must be "likeable", as well as knowledgeable. For introverts, connecting with an audience feels like being thrust into an overwhelming social situation. The very skills that make a speaker engaging – natural conversation, easy rapport, animated expressions – are often the ones that drain them the most.
Successfully engaging an audience requires three key elements: project genuine enthusiasm despite some anxiety, share a vulnerable personal story, and maintain a conversational tone – as if chatting with a friend over coffee.
My client started exactly where you might be – dreading the spotlight, convinced her written words should be enough. We worked together to develop her speaking voice, starting with small groups. She learned to channel her written passion into spoken energy. Six months later, she commanded a room of 200 people, sharing her book's message with the same confidence she felt on the page. The audience feedback? "Your enthusiasm was contagious!" Today, her speaking engagements are an effective book marketing tool, as well as a new source of revenue
Let me share another story that captures this magic. Thomas Heatherwick, the renowned architect, was speaking at Stanford. When my friend, an architect, invited his wife to attend, she responded emphatically: 'I HATE architects' talks! They're SO boring!'
Despite her protests, the architect’s wife attended. Midway through, she turned to her husband and whispered words he never expected: 'I could have a beer with this guy.' In less than an hour, Heatherwick had converted his harshest critic into someone who felt like she'd found a friend. How? By creating an intimate conversation with 400 people through honesty, humility, and humor. And even more than winning over one skeptic, his engaging and down-to-earth presentation increased the audience’s respect for both him and his work.
Your book deserves to be heard, not just read. Your ideas have the power to transform not just minds but hearts. And sometimes, the most profound impact happens when you step away from the page and share your passion in person.
The stage may feel daunting now. But remember, the same inspiration that fueled your book can power your speech and leave the audience with lasting insights. Imagine how many more lives you will touch if you share your message on the page AND the stage. It comes down to this: Your book doesn't speak for itself. YOU are its voice.
